THE TUESDAY TOAST - S02E01

The Physicist’s favorite quiz, The Tuesday Toast is back with Season 2.

Buckle up to answer intriguing questions based around the Physics community - from topics ranging from electronics to the lives of our favorite Physicists. 

We present to you the first episode of The Tuesday Toast Season 2 :





The questions are as follows:

1. Name the physicist and the kind of radiation he worked with which earned him the 1911 Nobel prize for physics. The radiation is also related to the discovery of a new constant in nature. Name the constant as well. 


Hint: The scientist had 5 middle names!!! And his first and last name start with W.


2.This algorithm developed in the late 18th century was used to calculate pi based on iteration. Starting with exact numbers the algorithm generates a series that rapidly  converges to pi. With only 25 iterations this can produce 45 Million accurate digits of pi. (WoW!!!) Identify this remarkable algorithm.


3.__ are immensely energetic explosions and the brightest electromagnetic events known to occur in the universe. They can last from milliseconds to several hours. Usually after an initial flash of     , a longer-lived afterglow is emitted at longer wavelengths. The intense radiation is mostly thought to be released during a supernova. A subclass may even originate from the merger of binary neutron stars. First detection was made by the Vela satellites.

4.____ is a lengthy prose poem (1848)  which was written by an American author which was received poorly in his day and generally described as absurd, even by friends. Modern critics continue to debate the significance of his work and some doubt its seriousness, in part because of the author's many incorrect assumptions and his comedic descriptions of well-known historical minds. Identify the literature work which discusses many astronomy-related  including the speed of the stars, the diameters of planets and distance between them, the weight of Earth, and the orbit of the newly discovered "Leverrier's planet"(later named Neptune) . The name of the work also relates to a very famous discovery done in the sixteenth century .

5.This scientist suffered from many symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder – he was obsessive about cleanliness, detested jewelry (he wouldn’t even talk to women wearing pearls!) and round objects, and wouldn’t touch hair. On the scientific front, he has many inventions to his name including the first AC motor. Some of his inventions and experiments are kept classified.
